Dr. Roderick González Murray serves as our Genetic Consultant for Panama, bringing together a unique combination of scientific expertise, government leadership, and lifelong ranching experience. Raised in a cattle-producing family, Dr. Murray has spent his career studying the relationship between genetics, fertility, and profitability in tropical beef production. He earned his bachelor's degree in Animal Science in Panama, a Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Colorado State University, and has completed advanced training in animal breeding, genetics, and reproductive biotechnology in Cuba, Spain, and Japan.
As a researcher with Panama's Livestock Innovation Institute, Dr. Murray has played a leading role in evaluating the country's national cattle herd and advising on strategies to improve reproductive efficiency, productivity, and long-term sustainability. His research focuses on helping producers identify genetics that perform under real-world, forage-based conditions rather than high-input management systems. Through his work, he has become a recognized advocate for functional cattle that combine fertility, adaptability, structural soundness, and efficiency while thriving in tropical environments.
In addition to his research, Dr. Murray is a respected cattle judge with more than twenty years of experience evaluating livestock across Panama. His perspective has evolved from selecting cattle based primarily on appearance to emphasizing functional traits supported by commercial performance and scientific data. As both a researcher and a cattle producer, he understands firsthand the challenges commercial ranchers face and is passionate about helping producers make breeding decisions that improve long-term profitability rather than simply chasing show ring trends.
Through Bos Sires, Dr. Murray works closely with producers throughout Panama to identify and promote genetics that are profitable, sustainable, and adapted to the country's production environments. His goal is to help build more fertile, resilient cattle populations while ensuring that future generations of ranchers inherit herds capable of succeeding under practical, low-input conditions.
