Gemstone Cattle Company is a multi-generational family operation located near Gem, Alberta, and is an extension of Doerksen Farms, which traces its roots back to 1926 when Peter and Tina Doerksen settled on the farm that remains the family's home today. The operation is now managed by the third and fourth generations of the Doerksen family and has grown into a diversified enterprise that includes commercial and purebred cattle, forage production, feedlot operations, and a successful grass-fed beef business.

For decades, the family has focused on raising cattle that perform under practical ranch conditions rather than chasing extremes in size or production. Their experience with both commercial cattle and direct-to-consumer beef marketing reinforced the importance of fertility, longevity, feed efficiency, and forage performance. Today, Gemstone Cattle Company is recognized across Canada for its forage-based Hereford and Red Angus genetics and was part of the operation that earned the Doerksen family Alberta's Outstanding Young Farmers recognition in 2024.

Gemstone's breeding program is centered on producing moderate-framed, easy-keeping cattle that efficiently convert forage into beef. All breeding cattle are developed on a forage-based system with little to no grain, and selection pressure is placed on animals that maintain condition, reproduce consistently, and perform well on grass. The family uses its own genetics in a large commercial cow herd and follows calves through finishing, giving them the ability to evaluate genetics from birth to harvest. They place strong emphasis on fertility, longevity, moderate size, fleshing ability, and forage efficiency while utilizing linebreeding and genetic testing to improve consistency within the herd. The result is a cow herd designed to stay productive for years, raise profitable calves, and efficiently meet the demands of both commercial producers and the beef marketplace.
